Magnifying glass
How a student looks at a sample with a magnifying glass. The glass is a real object on the desk — the student drags it to hover over a sample, and the magnified view appears through a picture-in-picture panel. Same gesture vocabulary as a thermometer.
A · The conceptual model
The magnifying glass is a lab object on the desk, not a UI panel that drops in. It declares object_purpose: [sample_viewer] in its lab-object manifest — the same declaration scales and thermometers use to publish their "I have a readout" semantic. The kit knows the glass wants a readout; the readout is the picture-in-picture panel.
Mechanically the glass is the thermometer-shaped sample viewer. A student picks the glass up and moves it over a sample, and the magnified view appears in the PiP. The glass is fluid by design — the student moves between samples to compare them, the way a thermometer dips into different containers. The PiP follows wherever the glass hovers.
B · What the student does
-
1
The magnifying glass sits on the desk.
At setup, the glass, the microscope, and the samples all sit on the desk. The student reads the step and identifies the first sample to inspect.
-
2
The student drags the glass over a sample.
Pick up the glass, drag it across the desk, hover it above the sample. The kit reads the glass's
vertical_distanceto the sample — when the glass is positioned over it (and high enough to be the right viewing distance), the magnified view appears in the PiP. -
3
The view follows the glass.
As the student drags the glass to a different sample, the PiP swaps content — the new sample's magnified imagery, the new identity in the HUD. The glass is the cursor; the PiP is the readout.
-
4
The student puts the glass back.
Drag the glass off the samples (out of
vertical_distancerange, or back to its rest position) — the PiP unmounts. The step can advance, or the student can pick the glass up again to revisit.
C · How the author writes it
One step, one operation. No pip: field — the magnifying glass's sample_viewer purpose triggers PiP enrichment, the same way the microscope does.
- step: 3
phase: action
description: "Look closely at each fuel sample with the magnifying glass."
ui: drag
operation: hover
object: magnifying_glass
targets: [wood_sample, coal_sample, peat_sample, charcoal_sample]
The hover operation
A new operation: sugar over attach with a vertical-distance trigger. The glass is the moving object; the sample(s) are the targets. The vertical distance threshold is read from the lab-object's properties — not authored per-step.
Multi-target by design: a student can sweep the glass across all four samples in one step. The PiP swaps content for each as the student passes over it.
